you can start now. A benefit of taking
lessons is a structured program that develops
and improves your individual level of physical
conditioning. Lessons are taught according to
each student's ability.
What does the word
"karate" mean?
Karate is a Japanese word that translates to
"empty hand".
What does the word "Taekwondo"
mean?
Taekwondo is a Korean word that translates to
"foot-hand way".
Will my child be a
"show off" or "bully"?
At
Northland Karate, we teach students that it is
NOT for showing off or picking on others. What
we learn is strictly for self-defense.
Discipline and respect are some of the many
positive traits that are part of our training.
Do you
"full-contact" spar?
No,
our type of sparring is the controlled American
point sparring style that is commonly found at
most of the tournaments throughout the U.S.
Do you go to
tournaments?
Yes,
though it is not required of the student, it is
an excellent way to find out what competition
and sportsmanship is all about. Sparring and
forms are both options, and some tournaments
even have board breaking competition.
What is "forms"?
A
form is a set pattern that is different for each
belt color. It is a routine that is done with
blocks, punches and kicks against an imaginary
opponent or opponents.
How do you progress
to the next belt level?
Formal tests are held when the student is ready
to progress. Blocking, kicking, forms, sparring
and board breaking are done in front of a panel
of black belt staff with questions about the art
finishing the test.
How long does it
take to get to black belt?
The
average length of time is approximately 4 years.
