Do I need to get in shape first?
No, you can start now. A benefit of taking lessons is a structured program that develops and improves your individual level of physical conditioning. Lessons are taught according to each student's ability.

What does the word "karate" mean?
Karate is a Japanese word that translates to "empty hand".

What does the word "Taekwondo" mean?
Taekwondo is a Korean word that translates to "foot-hand way".

Will my child be a "show off" or "bully"?
At Northland Karate, we teach students that it is NOT for showing off or picking on others. What we learn is strictly for self-defense. Discipline and respect are some of the many positive traits that are part of our training.

Do you "full-contact" spar?
No, our type of sparring is the controlled American point sparring style that is commonly found at most of the tournaments throughout the U.S.

Do you go to tournaments?
Yes, though it is not required of the student, it is an excellent way to find out what competition and sportsmanship is all about. Sparring and forms are both options, and some tournaments even have board breaking competition.

What is "forms"?
A form is a set pattern that is different for each belt color. It is a routine that is done with blocks, punches and kicks against an imaginary opponent or opponents.

How do you progress to the next belt level?
Formal tests are held when the student is ready to progress. Blocking, kicking, forms, sparring and board breaking are done in front of a panel of black belt staff with questions about the art finishing the test.

How long does it take to get to black belt?
The average length of time is approximately 4 years.

Do I need to wait for the next quarter to start?
No, you can start immediately, the cost is pro-rated.
